The 320-Year-Old Shani Dev Temple in Amritsar: A Story of Faith and Miracles
Amritsar, the spiritual heart of Punjab, is home to many historic and sacred sites. How the Temple Was Built
Long ago, a devoted saint, Pandit Kedarnath Ji, used to meditate under a sacred Pipal tree, praying to Lord Shani Dev. As word spread, people started visiting him to seek guidance and blessings. Among them was a wealthy marvadi merchant, Purshotam Das, who regularly came to pray.
Despite his devotion, Purshotam Das and his wife remained childless, even at the age of 55. Feeling hopeless, he pleaded with Pandit Ji to pray for him, promising to expand the temple if he was blessed with a child. Pandit Ji humbly responded that he could only pray to Lord Shani Dev, and the rest depended on divine will. With faith and devotion, he continued his prayers—and soon, a miracle happened!
A few months later, the merchant and his wife were blessed with a baby boy, whom they lovingly named Pahaad Mal—a name symbolizing strength like a mountain. Keeping his promise, Purshotam Das rebuilt and expanded the temple, making it even grander than before.
Challenges and a Divine Warning
Originally, the temple had three floors, but over time, it became weak due to aging and lack of maintenance. To prevent collapse, the top floor was removed, but the temple remained a popular site of worship.
Later, when the Golden Temple Heritage Project was expanding, officials planned to demolish the temple to create a direct route to the bus stand. They wanted to keep only the idol of Lord Shani Dev and remove the rest of the structure. This angered the local Hindu community, who strongly protested against the decision.
One of the officers in charge of the demolition experienced something unbelievable. The night before the demolition was scheduled, Lord Shani Dev appeared in his dream and warned him, saying, “Do you know who I am? If you continue with this, you and your family will regret this decision for generations.”
Terrified, the officer—who was originally from Andhra Pradesh—refused to continue with the demolition. He even requested a transfer to another city, saying he would rather quit his job than be responsible for destroying the temple. The next day, he visited the temple, bowed before Lord Shani Dev, and apologized. As an act of repentance, he donated tiles for the temple’s inner walls.
A Temple of Miracles
This temple is not just historical; it is also known for miraculous blessings. Many people who had lost their jobs or businesses found success again after coming here to serve and pray—especially on Saturdays. Some, who were once struggling, are now successful hotel and showroom owners!
